Home Energy Audit

This time of year people are trying to stay comfortable. But they also want to save money on their home energy bills! We want to let you know about four things you can do to do your own home energy audit, to make sure your house is as energy efficient as possible.

1. Watch out for drafts.

Check around to see if there are any areas of your home where air may be leaking. Maybe some of your doors and windows have spots where they’re letting air in, or perhaps your fireplace. Check your baseboards and electrical outlets. Do you have a doggie door? See how much air that may be letting in. To make it easier to find leaks try wetting your hand, or using a lit incense stick and watching for the trail of smoke to show you where you have a draft.

2. Check out your attic.

You want to make sure you have plenty of insulation in your attic. If you live in an older home, you might not have thought about your insulation for a while. Take a look to see if you have a good depth of insulation and that it covers your attic evenly.

3. Maintain your equipment.

Check your heating and cooling units to make sure they’re working properly. If your equipment is more than 15 years old you will probably save money in the long run by upgrading your system. A newer system will run more smoothly, and will typically be quieter. And you may even be able to qualify for some tax credits as well! If you need help deciding whether to upgrade your system or if you need your system checked out and tuned up, we can help you with any of that.

4. Look at your lights.

Many people don’t think about their lights when it comes to making their homes energy efficient. We recommend replacing standard light bulbs with LED lights. This will reduce the amount of energy you use in your home, and it actually creates less work for your air conditioning system. Avoid halogen lamps—those produce a great deal of heat. Also, consider installing dimmer switches to lower the lights and also lower your energy use.

We can help you out with any of these and do a professional energy audit on your heating and air system. If you’d like to talk to us about that, just click the button below. We’d love to help you!
